Cameraless Animation

Cameraless animation workshop with Lizzy Hobbs

It was really interesting to see early experimental animation techniques - Len Lye's Colour Box, Stan Brahkage's Mothlight, Norman McLaren's Blinkety Blank were really inspiring in that they engaged directly with the physical medium of the film strip.

Trying out some of this was also really fun, drawing directly on the bleached strip was exciting and since I love doing things by hand, and seeing them as real things in front of me rather than as information on a screen.

I'd really like to try other techniques as well, like scratching out or sticking materials onto the strip to create things, almost like a collage or graffiti on the film. And it's really exciting to think about techniques like that as possibilities for animation, and how they can be used today and what can be achieved conceptually.
